Giraffe Manor. It could be named for its kitschy décor or tacky lawn art, but thankfully the elegant brick and ivy-laced abode is so named for its resident herd of Rothschild Giraffes. The regal creatures arrived at the manor--located about 6 miles southwest of Nairobi in Karen, Kenya--in 1974 as part of a conservation project. The project's success allowed for the evolution into today's Giraffe Manor, which brings in giraffes with the ultimate goal of exporting them back to their original home ranges. In the interim, they both wander 60 hectares of pristine grounds and delight guests with peek-a-boo appearances at the breakfast table, the front door, and through the bedroom window. The giraffes also share their homes with warthogs, bushbuck, dik dik, and ove180 species of birds swooping around the Ngong hills.

Giraffe Manor itself is a stately 1930s piece of architecture modeled after a Scottish hunting lodge. Accommodations welcome visitors into 10 luxury double ensuite bedrooms, replete with four poster beds and antique décor. Stays include breakfast, lunch, and dinner in-house either in the cozy sitting room, fine dining area, or under the stars. Home cooking GM-style features the likes of Mount Kenya Smoked Trout pate, fillet of beef, or watamu red snapper.

Must-Haves at Giraffe Manor

  • A mild interest in giraffes.
  • Anti-bacterial soap and Dude Wipes, because a giraffe is almost certainly going to lick you in the face...and maybe other places...while you sleep.
  • A 3XL saddle and exceptional upper body strength. Giraffes will allow humans to ride them, but only if humans prove their worthiness by climbing up a hind leg to mount.
  • Bacon. Giraffes love bacon.
  • In the absence of bacon, they will also accept a hearty plate of chicken & waffles.
